Asam Sahitya Sabha North America (ASSNA)

Asam Sahitya Sabha, North America (ASSNA) is our literary wing. During our Convention, we started publishing the magazine Luitor Pora Mississippi (“LPM”– I believe Dr. Sanjib Barua of Bard College suggested the name), although initially it was published as “Pravasi”, and also a little collection of writings of our community members titled Enajori, initiated by Dr. Brojen Bordoloi. The host committee used to publish the LPM, but it is believed that 1994 onwards, the Asam Sahitya Sabha, North America (ASSNA), a unit earlier formally established in 1982 as the literary wing of AANA (with its autonomy under the umbrella of the parent organization in Assam) under the leaderships of Dr. Kripanath Borah, Dr. Dilip Dutta, Dr. Brojen Bordoloi, and others to be part of our Convention (where each AANA member is also a member of the ASSNA), was entrusted with the responsibilities of the publication, although AANA pays the cost. (Enajori was discontinued!). And we all three organizations are sponsors of the Convention, AANA our parent organization, AFNA our non-profit wing, and ASSNA, the literary wing. A few of our Conventions have had surpluses and all the Convention surpluses go to AANA or towards future expenses of Assam Convention.  Starting our Conventions in rented Church Halls, School Auditoriums, and Community Centers, we have traversed a long way to the present-day Conventions at reputable hotels starting with a low-budget convention held in a hotel in 1987 for the first time.

Founded in 1982 after approval from the main Assam Sahitya Sabha (completed by Kripanath Borah). Publication of AANA annual souvenir:  responsibility assigned to ASSNA

Membership: All AANA members are deemed ASSNA members for an annual lump-sum payment to main Assam Sahitya Sabha of a nominal fee.

Luitor Pora Mississipi: 1st published: in 1982 from Detroit as Pravasi (at 3rd Assam Convention)Name changed to: as “Luitor Pora Mississippi” in 1984 (3rd publication, in 5th Assam convention).

Testimonials

Dear Shakuntala Choudhury

Dr. Shakuntala Choudhury Former President of ASSNA

Thank you for your kind gesture in including me in the GBM of ASSNA (that turned out to be a global webinar ). I must confess that initially I had been hesitant but finally decided to sit through the virtual meeting. Can you imagine my astonishment at the exceptionally passionate display of love for our homeland Assam that became increasingly evident as the meeting progressed. I got more than what I had bargained for. I congratulate you on the choice of spokespersons. Smti. Mrinalini Debi’s well delivered speech was extremely focused and I found the thought creeping up on me ‘worthy mother of a worthy son’ . She is undoubtedly the right person to lend a helping hand to the various ventures of ASSNA . The icing on the cake was the intellectual, writer and orator Shri. Mayur Bora . He impressed me (and continuously) till the end by his repository of lesser known historical facts and remarkable analytical skill. I have been imbued with a peculiar sense of pride by his mention of my great grand uncle , Late Rai Bahadur Ananda Chandra Agarwalla of Borongabari as I’m sure Jayanti Barooah and you were at the mention of Late Shri Satya Bora and Late Shri Jyotiprasad Medhi . I feel that we need to cultivate the habit of honouring our illustrious personalities at the right time and definitely not after they have left us. I have also been struck by how seriously you and your team take the ‘welfare of Assam’ issue to heart. You are indeed an able ambassador of our homeland Assam. I pray that this testimonial impells you (during your tenure as President ) and all future torchbearers to develop this concern into a larger case study involving many specially Shri Kuladhar Saikia, President of Assam Sahitya Sabha and it’s Vice President Smti. Mrinalini Debi . This journey of love needs the strong grasp of our mother tongue ‘Oxomiya’ . All wortwhile journeys have started with a single step . This journey too could very well be started by today’s Mothers and Aita-Ma’s using Oxomiya folklore as the basis of bedtime stories – Tejimola ,Tula aru Teja etc. along with Cinderella and Snow White , if deemed necessary. Shakuntala if time is money , then I have indeed emerged richer from the webinar. Do not hesitate to include me in any venture you feel I can do justice to .Signing off with a fervent ‘Joi Aai Oxom ‘.
