Nomination Request for Labanya Borra Memorial Scholarships for Assamese-American/Canadian High School Seniors of Its Members - By May 15, 2017

Assam Association of North America has established the Labanya Borra Memorial Scholarships with generous and commendable sponsorship from the Saharia Family of late Labanya Borra to memorialize her contributions to the Assamese community in North America over four decades and her lifelong dedication to Assamese literature that she demonstrated through her professional work and stewardship at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.

Beginning this school year 2016, two scholarships will be awarded to two Assamese American/Canadian High School seniors whose parents are members of AANA and who are entering college at the end of the school year. Both the awards in the amount of $1,000 each with a certificate will be given at the Assam Convention. One scholarship will be given in each of the following two categories:

A) Scholastic accomplishments

B) Literary excellence 

Applications will be accepted beginning January 1, 2017 for this school year and will be closed on May 15, 2017.

Award announcements will be made before the convention.

The applications should contain:

  1. Student’s name and contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and email address
  2. Parents name and contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and email address
  3. AANA membership status of parents
  4. Student’s High School name and address
  5. College/University the student got admission or applying with addresses of those
  6. College/University Admission Essays
  7. List of Extra Curricular Activities
  8. Students may apply for both Categories A and B, however only one scholarship will be awarded to one student
  9. Students applying for Category A should demonstrate their scholastic accomplishments by listing those all and attaching available and permissible supporting documents, such as copies of SAT/ACT score reports, grade reports from Junior-Senior years, letter(s) from current AANA members not related, academic advisors, or teachers, etc.
  10. Similarly, students applying for Category B should demonstrate their literary excellence by writing and submitting an essay on a topic important to Assam (e.g., the incessant poaching of One Horn Rhinos), Assamese living in Assam or abroad including North America, or second generation Assamese Americans/Canadians such as the students themselves. In addition, copies of any literary publications in school magazines, Luitor pora Mississippi, Pronaam, etc. may be enclosed to demonstrate his/her literary excellence.
